Corrosion susceptibility of steel drums to be used as containers for intermediate level nuclear waste

چکیده
The present work is a study of the corrosion susceptibility of steel drums in contact with cemented ion-exchange resins contaminated with different types and concentrations of aggressive species. A special type of specimen was manufactured to simulate the cemented ion-exchange resins in the drum. The evolution of the corrosion potential and the corrosion rate of the steel, as well as the electrical resistivity of the matrix were monitored over a time period of 900 days. The aggressive species studied were chloride ions (the main ionic species of concern) and sulphate ions (produced during radiolysis of the cationic exchange-resins after cementation). The work was complemented with an analysis of the corrosion products formed on the steel in each condition, as well as the morphology of the corrosion products. When applying the results obtained in the present work to estimate the corrosion depth of the steel drums containing the cemented radioactive waste after a period of 300 years (foreseen durability of the Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste facility in Argentina) , it is found that in the most unfavourable case (high chloride contamination), the corrosion penetration will be considerably lower than the thickness of the wall of the steel drums.

Corrosion behaviour of steel rebars embedded in a concrete designed for the construction of an intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility
The National Atomic Energy Commission of the Argentine Republic is developing a nuclear waste disposal management programme that contemplates the design and construction of a facility for the final disposal of intermediate-level radioactive wastes. The repository is based on the use of multiple, independent and redundant barriers. The major components are made in reinforced concrete so, the dur...

The Department of Energy’s Pantex Plant is where the nation’s nuclear weapons are being dismantled. The facility generated low-level radioactive waste contaminated with tritium. The waste consists of scintillation liquid, scintillation vials (glass and plastic) and support material (dry activated waste). The waste was generated as a result of plant processing and area surveys. Mason and Hanger ...
متن کاملA Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Single-Use Fibre Drums Versus Reusable Steel Drums
This paper deals with a comparative analysis of two different packaging and transport scenarios, which exemplifies the implications of choosing between single-use and reusable packaging. In particular, transport of a batch of chemicals by means of disposable fibre drums vs. reusable steel drums is investigated from a life cycle perspective, and the associated environmental impact in terms of Gl...
متن کاملInitiation and propagation of a single pit on stainless steel using a local probe technique.
Experiments about single pit initiation and propagation were performed on 316L stainless steel with the aim to determine the pitting corrosion behaviour for nuclear waste containers. The experimental setup permits to control the pit development at will and to create reproducible single pits in three dimensions. Radial and deep evolutions of a disc shaped pit were studied for propagation times o...
متن کاملInvestigation of Corrosion of Steel by Lead Bismuth Eutectic
A new research program has begun at UNLV in accelerator transmutation of waste. Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) has been proposed for use in programs for accelerator transmutation of waste. The LBE acts both as a coolant and as a sputtering target. We have recently initiated a program to investigate the corrosion of steels by LBE. Corrosion products and chemical reactions will be identified using U...
